GOD IS IN THE DETAILS

Motel strip-ped down

By Shawn Micallef

The motel strip west of the Humber River is slowly disappearing. A remnant of the golden age of the automobile when “motor hotels” lined highways and starred in Hitchcock films, the strip is being consumed by new condo buildings. Motels like The Seahorse are gone, but a few still stand in what was once called Humber Bay Village. Places like the Hillcrest, with its 1950s style and space-age sign out front. The gem is the Casa Mendoza, with one of Toronto's best patios and a piano bar where everybody sings along to Neil Diamond and Billy Joel.
